Transportation Funding
Share |

For more than 50 years, the American Council of Engineering Companies, California has worked in great part to create more work, opportunity and profit for your businesses. Together, we have strived to build a better California. Now we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to do it again.

ACEC California, California Professional Firefighters, California Association of Highway Patrolmen, American Society of Civil Engineers, business, local government, labor, environmentalists and first responders urge NO on Prop 6 because it eliminates more than $5 billion annually in existing transportation funds and stops funding for more than 6,500 bridge and road safety, transportation and public transit improvement projects currently underway throughout California.

This funding represents the most significant contribution to California's infrastructure, ever. The state’s gas tax reached 18 cents a gallon, after the January 17 Northridge earthquake in Los Angeles. It had not been increased until SB 1 passed in 2017, according to the Department of Transportation. If the repeal is successful in November, we will not have another chance to secure funding for our industry - not in this generation.

How You Can Help:

ACEC California and the other members of the Fix Our Roads Coalition are redoubling efforts to develop a formidable campaign to defeat Proposition 6, which is the ballot number for the effort to repeal Senate Bill 1. SB 1 created the landmark “Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017”; it raises $5 billion annually in new revenues to invest in California’s local streets and roads.

Coalition members—including several individual ACEC California firms—have already committed tens of millions of dollars toward preserving the critical funding that SB 1 provided for the state’s crumbling transportation infrastructure, but political strategists expect the campaign through November will require more. ACEC California’s goal for the A/E Community is to raise $2.5 million for the cause.

Fix Our Roads Coalition:

ACEC California continues to work with the Fix Our Roads Coalition to push back on repeal efforts. This dangerous potential amendment to the constitution would require a vote of the electorate for any increase in a tax on fuel or cars dating back to January 2017, and for any increase in future years, thus repealing SB 1 funds. Voters passed Prop 69 in June that prevents Sacramento politicians from diverting transportation funds and dedicates these funds only for transportation improvements.
